Do You Know Your Burglar?

Burglar-InsidejobOften a burglar is not some random person off the street. You’d be surprised to learn just how many burglaries are “inside jobs.”

The source of the problem might be your daughter’s boyfriend, a workman who comes into your home, or your babysitter.

These people get a lot of opportunities when they enter your home. They get to see the layout. They get a chance to find out if you own anything that’s interesting to them.

How can you protect your home from this type of criminal?

1. Manage alarm codes

There are times when you might need to set up an alarm code for a repairman or other professional since they’ll need to be in your home when you aren’t there. If that happens, you need to make sure that you change or remove the code as soon as they’re done.

After all, you don’t want to give these people open access to your home at a time when you cannot prove that they were there.

Gather Evidence

Home automation is a great way to deal with “inside job” burglaries. Automated deadbolts let you know when someone enters the home or leaves the home, and the notice gets recorded on your cell phone.

Image sensing or video monitoring means that you could be gathering evidence for the police even if someone with access to your home starts to steal from you. A babysitter or a pet sitter with an alarm code would be deterred from committing any theft because they know you’re watching. And if they do commit theft you have everything you need to press charges.

Remember, good security is all about layering your defenses. An alarm system is one layer. Good home security practices are another. And home automation is still another layer of security.

No defense is perfect. But adding lots of small defenses together can make a big difference in your home.
