Keep Your House Safe this Halloween

halloween-safetyHalloween is a lot of fun for the whole family. But it can offer some real risks to your family as well. That’s why we wanted to take a moment to offer some tips on how to keep your home and family safe.

First, let’s talk about your home. Then we’ll talk about all of your little ghouls and goblins.

Protecting Your Home

There are some people who take the “trick” part of trick-or-treating a little too seriously. Homes can easily become targets for burglars or vandals.

While your monitored home security system is a big part of this safety package, there’s more that you can do. Think about installing some inexpensive low-voltage landscape lighting to illuminate the walkway all the way to your entry doors. Keep your porch lights on. And use decorative lighting strategically to illuminate the shadowed portions of your yard.

Think about it. If a vandal has his choice between risking a witness in your well-lit yard or going to your neighbor’s shadowy yard across the street, which yard do you think he’ll choose to toilet paper?

Protecting Your Ghouls and Goblins

If your child is trick-or-treating without you, make sure he or she has a buddy to go with. He or she should have a pre-planned route and a cell phone to work with.

Your children should carry glow-sticks or reflectors to ensure that drivers can see them.

If you have the choice between dressing your child up in a mask or using face paint, use face paint. Masks can restrict your child’s visibility, which can become a safety risk.

At the end of the night you should inspect a child’s candy before allowing him or her to eat any of it. Look for compromised weapons, or any candy that doesn’t feel or smell right. Some hospitals will X-ray candy for free.

Staying safe is the first step in having a happy Halloween. Have fun out there, but don’t forget to protect your family!
