Can You Have a Motion Detector if You Have Pets?

motion-detector-petsOne of the questions we often get when we’re helping people set up their home security systems is whether or not they can have a motion detector if they have pets. So we thought we’d take a moment to answer that question on our blog.

The answer is, “it depends.”

If you have dogs, and just dogs, then a motion detector is no problem. The motion detector’s line of sight is meant to pick up someone at human height, which means that it should move right over the heads of most dogs.

However, this can change if your dogs routinely get up on the furniture, which could change their height enough to set off the motion detector.

You do not want a motion detector if you have cats, however. Cats routinely jump up on things, and even though they are far shorter than dogs they can easily set off false alarms.

Fortunately, there is alternative technology for people who have pets that would make a motion detector unsuitable for their homes. We often recommend installing a “glass break” instead, which detects broken glass.

This can often be a better choice simply because many homes in the Charlotte, NC area have sliding glass patio doors which represent a rather large security risk and a temptation for any crook with a hammer. Glass breaks will set off the alarm as soon as they start attacking these weak points.

You also don’t have to remember to turn glass breaks off in the morning and back on at night. That’s something you do have to remember to do with a motion detector. So for many, a glass break will be the better choice anyway.
