How to Prevent Christmas Tree Fires

We talked about safe holiday decorations in a previous post. In that post, we suggested artificial trees as a safe alternative to live trees.

However, for some families, Christmas just isn’t Christmas unless they are enjoying a live Christmas tree with everything it entails.

That’s why we wanted to take a few moments to talk about live Christmas tree safety, too.

First, you need to make sure that you choose a tree with fresh, green needles. Live Christmas trees are at their most dangerous when they are dry, so you want one that has not been allowed to dry out.

When you get the tree home, trim the bottom, then place it in your tree stand. Make sure you’re watering it every single day.

Tree placement is also important. You want to avoid placing it near heaters, and you want to make sure that it’s not blocking any exits. Make sure it’s not touching any light fixtures, too.

The tree becomes a major hazard as soon as it starts dropping needles. Just take a look at the video below to see just how fast a Christmas tree can transform from decoration to deadly fire.

Of course, you should also make sure that your smoke detectors are in good working order. If you got frustrated and ripped one out of the wall earlier in the year it may be time to replace them with hardwired smoke detectors.

Fortunately, JSB can help with that. Call us today to get smoke detectors that will call the fire department just in case your Christmas tree goes rogue on you this holiday season. As you can see, these fires spread very fast. We want you to concentrate on getting your loved ones out the door, and we want you to get help as quickly as possible to save as much of your home as possible.
