Guard Your Smart Phone!

Smartphone.Quick: how much personal information do you think is stored on your smart phone right now?

We’re willing to bet it’s more than you think. The typical stolen smart phone can give thieves a great deal of access to your life, including:

  • Your e-mail account
  • Your social media accounts
  • Access to important documents in the cloud
  • Information on your bank accounts
  • Access to your home’s internet of things
  • Contact information for family members and friends, which a thief can use to commit additional crimes.

Clearly, we want to keep all of that information out of the hands of smart phone thieves. Here are some steps you can take.

Password protect your phone.

Yes, we know it’s kind of a pain to have to type in a password each and every time you want to use your phone. However, a password can slow a thief down.

You might need some time to discover your phone is missing. If you take the next two steps you’ll be able to handle the situatoin almost immediately. If you don’t, that password on your phone will at least give you some time to start cancelling credit cards and changing passwords–before the thief gains access to them.

Install a tracking app.

Trackers are useful for two reasons.

First, they can help police catch your cell phone thief, which is always a plus.

Second, they can help you find a lost phone, which means you’re not going into full on panic mode if, for example, your phone merely slipped beneath your car seat after falling out of a pocket or purse.

Install a remote wiper app.

You can also install or enable remote wipe, which will simply destroy all of the information on your phone in the event that it is pilfered. This is a lot quicker, more efficient, and secure than trying to change every password or cancel every account.

Obviously, we hope you never get your phone stolen. But if you do, it’s nice to know that you can do something about it.
